Chicago’s Most Thrilling Paddle Board Experience

Standing up, paddle boarding and yoga, three things I love, but never thought I would combine. With the help of Chicago Paddle Company, it was made not only a reality, but an incredible experience.

With a variety of classes ranging from introduction to paddle, to SUP core fitness, Chicago Paddle Company and their awesome team members will blow you away with the experiences they have to offer. (Check out all the classes they have to offer, here.)

I attended the Saturday morning Beach Yoga and Paddle lead by Alison, the most wonderful instructor ever! Having only ever done yoga a handful of times and paddled only once before in an intro class, I wasn’t too sure if I would be able to keep up.

At 9:00 A.M. we began yoga on the beach. Alison, being the incredible instructor she is, made it so easy to relax and stretch while keeping an eye out for everyone’s skill level. I was so appreciative of this as I am so new to yoga.

At about 9:45 A.M. we hit the water, but first had a small introductory reminder lesson. All of us had paddled at least once before, so an entire lesson was not necessary. This quick session included how to use the equipment safely and how to actually stand up and paddle.

Starting on the knees, paddling out from the shore while gaining a bit of steady speed, is a good set-up for a smooth and successful stand up. If you’re like me, it will take about 2-3 minutes to get use to the feeling of standing and paddling and realize you are actually very sturdy on these boards.

Your first instinct will be to watch the board and your paddle, but this is exactly what you do not want to do. Trust yourself and look out to the horizon while you paddle. Doing this helps center your body and keep you in the upright position.

I wanted the morning to have no end. The weather was perfect, about 75 degrees fahrenheit and sunny with little to no wind. Wind can make for a very difficult paddle as it causes the water to get choppy.

I can say, with immense certainty, that I will be back soon to enjoy more of what Chicago Paddle Company has to offer. Check out my video of the whole experience below!
